Cancer Fighting Foods You Must Include In Your Diet

In recent decades we have come a long way in healthcare developments. Research and technology have contributed in advancing care and providing patients the right treatment. Despite advances, healthcare officials still advocate adopting health-conscious lifestyles in an effort to prevent disease from occurring in the first place. Thus we are seeing a shift toward preventative care as a whole. Prevention is indeed better than cure.

Cancer research has indeed advanced over the years but we have yet to find a general cure. In his 2016 State of the Union address, President Barack Obama announced the National Cancer Moonshot Initiative headed by Joe Biden, to accelerate cancer research and put an end to this refractory disease. It is important to note that cancer is not one disease, but a collection of more than 100 diseases in which cells radically begin to grow out of control.

As scientists work to discover the cure for cancer, many studies have been conducted to understand the effect foods have in preventing and fighting cancer. Here are ten healthy foods that are known to help prevent and fight cancer.

Avocado

Recent studies suggest that eating avocado can reduce the risk of cancer. Avocado contains carotenoids, the components that can fight cancer.

Green Tea

Green tea has a range of health benefits. One among them is its ability to prevent and fight cancer, since it contains catechins which are cancer fighting antioxidants.

Spinach

Lutein found in spinach is known to prevent mouth, oesophageal, and stomach cancer.

Turmeric

A staple ingredient used in many traditional Indian meals, turmeric contains curcumin which can stop the growth of certain types of cancer cells.

Whole Grain

Whole grain is one  of the most powerful foods in preventing and fighting cancer. That is because whole grain contain lignans that behave similar to antioxidants in helping to prevent and fight cancer growth.

Garlic

The benefits of garlic are abundant. Fighting cancer in addition to other diseases are two such benefits of garlic. The sulphur in garlic is what leaves you with unpleasant breath, but if you look beyond the smell and taste, garlic is one of the healthiest foods in preventing disease.

Broccoli

Eating broccoli may help prevent stomach, mouth and oesophageal cancer. Consuming raw broccoli activates protective enzymes that help fight cancer growth.

Tomatoes

Tomatoes help prevent prostate, breast and lung cancer. The red color in tomato comes from lycopene, a phytochemical that is  a cancer fighting antioxidant.

Strawberries

This delicious fruit has amazing benefits beyond being one of your favorite healthy snacks. Strawberry extract helps fight colon cancer cells. Like strawberries, most other berries contain antioxidants that help prevent and fight cancer.

Carrots
You must have heard by now that carrots can be good for your eyesight. But did you know they can be helpful in preventing cancer too? Cooking vegetables can make the cell walls less rigid, which makes it easier to absorb certain nutrients and digest food better. Compared to raw carrots, cooked carrots, for example, have more beta carotene, an antioxidant that can be converted to vitamin A and improves bone, eye, and reproductive health.
